When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?

You can bring your child to our office as soon as the first tooth erupts, no later than his/her first birthday. Our dentist won’t have to do any treatment for your child at the first appointment. This gives your child a chance to meet his/her dentist in a non-threatening way. Our dentist will perform an oral examination, provide care instructions, and answer any questions you have about your child’s oral health.

How can I prepare my child for the first dental visit?

There are several ways to prepare your child for his/her first dental appointment:

Read a story or watch a show about a first dental visit to give your child an idea of what to expect.

Pretend to be a dentist and check your child’s teeth.

Talk about the dentist in a positive way so as not to scare your child.

What can I do to protect my child’s teeth from cavities at home?

It’s important to teach your children at a young age to care for their teeth in order to avoid dental problems along the way. Here’s what you can do to keep your child’s teeth healthy:

Limit sugary food, drinks, and snacks. Sugar attracts bacteria that causes cavities.
Brush and floss your child’s teeth until they are 6 years old.
Include good sources of calcium to your child’s diet such as yogurt, broccoli, and cheese.
Schedule regular dentist visits for your child.

How often does my child need to see a dentist?

We recommend scheduling an appointment every 6 months to prevent cavities and other dental problems.
