What is a dental veneer?
A dental veneer is an ultra-thin shell made of porcelain or composite resin that is cemented over the tooth’s surface to correct dental issues. Although veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure, they come with protective qualities and may eliminate the need for more extensive dental treatments.
Dental veneers can be a good solution for these problems:
- Gaps between teeth
- Chipped or broken tooth
- Uneven or irregularly shaped tooth
- Teeth that are not the same length
- Teeth discoloration
- Worn enamel
What can I expect during a dental veneer procedure?
Dr. Douglas Kim will likely administer a local anesthetic to make you feel comfortable during tooth preparation and veneer placement. Then, your tooth is prepared by minimally reshaping it with a small handheld rotational cutting device called a bur to provide the best fit. If your veneer is made of composite resin, Dr. Kim will apply the composite material to your tooth, shape it, and harden it using high-intensity light. When the composite is hardened, he will polish your veneer to make it look like a natural tooth.
If your treatment involves porcelain, Dr. Kim will prepare the tooth by trimming the enamel. The, he will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental lab for fabrication which takes about 1-2 weeks. When the veneer comes back from the lab, Dr. Kim will prepare the tooth by cleaning and roughening the tooth surface to allow the veneer to adhere to your tooth. The veneer is placed on the tooth using special cement, then ultraviolet light is used to harden it.
How long do dental veneers last?
You can expect dental veneers to last up to 5 years with the help of good oral hygiene and regular dentist visits and professional cleanings. Your veneers can chip like real teeth, so avoid biting your fingernails, grinding your teeth, or chewing on hard objects like ice.
