Dental Crowns in Chino Hills

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is an ideal restoration for a tooth that has been broken or weakened by decay. It is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to improve its structure and appearance. The crown fully covers the visible part of the tooth at and above the gum line.

Your dentist may recommend a dental crown to:

  • Protect a weak tooth from further damage
  • Replace a larger filling
  • Restore a cracked or chipped tooth
  • Cover a poorly shaped or discolored tooth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Protect and restore a tooth after a root canal procedure

What should I expect during my dental crown procedure?

Getting a new dental crown usually takes place over two visits. First, your tooth will be numbed before removing the decay in and around it. Then, your dentist will file down the tooth to create an impression for your dental crown. The impression is sent to a lab and usually takes 2 weeks to produce. Your dentist will put a temporary crown until the permanent one is complete.

The temporary crown will be placed during your second appointment. Your dentist will remove the temporary crown, check the fit of the permanent crown and make adjustments. Once you’re happy with the fit, your permanent crown will be cemented into place.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns can last 5-10 years depending on how well you take care of it. Good oral hygiene and regular dental exams and dental cleanings can help extend the lifespan of your crown.
